Former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is still keeping his options open as his meeting with PML-N President Nawaz Sharif was about exchanging pleasantries and nothing beyond it, insiders told on Tuesday.
The body language of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, during the course of meeting which continued for almost two hours, did not suggest that he wanted to join the PML-N, sources privy to the Sharif family informed this correspondent.
Similarly, Qureshi, during his interaction with the media after the meeting at Raiwind, avoided giving any clear-cut response to the queries of reporters on joining the PML-N or PTI and continued trumpeting that he would make an announcement on his future political course in Ghotki public gathering on November 27.
PML-N sources claimed that besides Nawaz Sharif and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, opposition leader in the National Assembly Ch Nisar, Sindh PML-N President Mamnoon Hussain and additional secretary general Ahsan Iqbal were also present in the meeting.
PML-N sources stated the party leadership was hopeful that Shah Mehmood Qureshi would join them after the meeting. Nevertheless, Qureshi, during the course of meeting, exchanged pleasantries and discussed the political scenario in which he was very critical of President Asif Zardari government. They claimed that he neither gave any hint of joining the PML-N nor conveyed to them that he had an understanding with the PTI. They were of the view that he was keeping his cards close to his chest and did not give them any hint of joining any particular political party.
Meanwhile, PTI sources claimed that though Shah Mehmood Qureshi had not given them any undertaking in this regard yet his son was organising and attending PTI's public gatherings in Multan and other cities.
During his talk with the media, Qureshi said the incumbent government had damaged the prestige of the National Assembly as they had not fulfilled any of their pledges nor implemented the jointly passed resolutions. He was of the view that the time had come when the people of Pakistan would have to decide as who should rule the country.
He alleged that the leadership of the PPP had lost its international significance and the world was not giving any importance to them. He stated the economic condition of the country was deplorable and the people wanted the elected representatives to get out of the assemblies and represent their point of view. He admitted that the people gave weightage to Nawaz Sharif and his party. He termed the resignation of ambassador Husain Haqqani as the right decision and demanded an impartial inquiry into the memo incident.
